The hotshot newspaper reporter Wallace Cook (Fredric March) tries to get in the good graces of his boss, Oliver Stone (Walter Connolly) by exploiting the "imminent" death of an ailing young woman, Hazel Flagg (Carole Lombard).
By way of newsprint the doomed young lady becomes the toast of New York City until her health situation is revealed as a hoax.
IMHO one of the best comedies that went into Public Domain.
The funny story telling by William A. Wellman and the great cast makes this one an highly enjoyable A Class Movie.
If you watch the movie carefully you`ll notice that William Wellman tries to took the already pretty face of Carole Lombard and place it into an high contrast frame which makes her face and mimic even more enjoyable to watch
like in this take for example

or when she`s wearing the Uniform of the NYC Firebrigade
Nice idea and Chapo Mr. Wellman

I love this, actress', Carol Lombard's, comedic/romantic roles, from this era, no matter which supportive male actors, enhance her inherent talent, my,
...
favorite being with, William Powell, one, of the great actors of his generation, where he rises from, seemingly, being, just another, down-and-out, Bum, living in a dump, who is used as an unusual oddity, to win a garish prize, for, dizzy-headed, Carole, who, hires him as a replacement butler, (who, falls, head-over-heels, with him), despite her, disappointed, sister's, continuous Anx,, to actually saving the spoiled, wealthy, family, from, its, demise, unknowingly, through his savvy investing (actually, had, a Harvard degree), and, Carole finally is happily married, instead of being the, former, spoiled, partying, lost soul. Appearances can be so deceptive. Ahhhh, Mr. Godfree. But, "Nothing Sacred", is great, too, highlighting, the, often, fraudulent nature, behind, hero/star-worshiping, (she, supposedly is dying from Radium poisoning), esp, in, New York, via, a hilarious movie script, where, eccentric characters, abound, and, yes, Carole, once, again, in a terrific ending, finds happiness and love. All of these romantic films she is in, although, often, funny, still, make a snide comment on, many of, life's, inconsistencies, which, most, subtly feel, are a, pain in the butt, or, pure, poppycock.

This film must have been graced with one (or some) very clever writer(s).
(Spoiler in this paragraph) The award for funniest and least expected scene ... ever in a motion picture should go for this ......where Fredric March's character, Wally Cook, is bitten by a small rabid-sounding child, who bolts out snarling from behind a picket fence, hell-bent to bite March in the thigh as he walks down the sidewalk, all because March is a no-good, snoopy newspaper man from New York, and the town doesn't want him around. (End Spoiler)
Actor Walter Connolly plays Walter Stone, the apoplectic boss of Cook (March), to the hilt. He delivers a very clever line in stating that he'll remove Wally Cook from the land of the living ... and we next witness how Connolly made good on his threat. (I won't spoil that for you.) Incredibly clever.
It's just a joyful, entertaining, and thoroughly clever little film. My only complaint comes that the ending was a bit short. Lombard and March are great together. I guess I wanted more, but they did wrap it up, so I'll still give it five stars. Loved it. Will watch it again. (Thanks to the original poster who put this film up for all of us to enjoy. That was very kind!)

To the person who asked if this is a colorized version, you can just read the opening credits to answer that (and please, o please, don't go to wikipedia
...
for authority on anything). Right there on the screen, it says filmed in color. This is classic screwball comedy with some acting masters (the great, died-too-soon Carole Lombard and the versatile Fredric March [see, e.g., Design for Living by Lubitsch and The Best Years of Our Lives, to name but 2 in his long, distinguished resume). Great character acting by screwball stalwart Walter Connolly . . . etc. This one definitely deserves a better restoration treatment. Thanks for posting it in the meantime.

I greatly enjoyed seeing this movie if only to watch Carole Lombard in color.
By today's standard the film is dated but considering it's over 75 years ... old, it holds up well for a romantic comedy.
Lombard has good comedic timing and is a beauty to behold. There are some outtakes at the archive.org site and you can see why Clark Gable deeply loved her. There are some excellent high contrast scenes of her portrait that is worth viewing for that alone. Maybe I have an infatuation with Lombard, if so it's a good one that I'm happy to have.
The lead male doesn't really equal Lombard in skills or talent.
The supporting cast ia adequate but nothing special.
Production values were decent.
Overall the film needs a good restoration as the Technicolor is showing its limits on the version I watched.

"I have seen this before in B&W. I assume this is a colorized version?"
Wikipedia says it was filmed in technicolor, the less-than-amazing colour ... probably comes from the transfer noted by the uploader. Still, awesome film.

tame by today's standards. Look for the Dutch girl giving us the finger.
Nicely shot, some nice biting comic remarks and well-acted for the genre. I know I've missed many things, I need to watch this one a couple more times.

Is there any way to upload a higher resolution copy? Even on the computer screen this is foggy-looking. But at least it has colour - my old print is

faded to sepia. Sad what happens to public domain movies.
Aside from that - this is one of the great comic classics, never get tired of it.
